Fantasy books are all about the impossible. Fantasy book include elements that are not realistic. For example some fantasy books include talking animals, magic, imaginary lands, and journey and quests. It is important to know that even though fantasy deals with the impossible " ..we will still find familiar human emotions and values-sadness, joy, love, hate, fear." (Russell, 2015, pg 204) Fantasy books are ones that children enjoy because that is where their imagination come into play and makes it easy for them to make up their own stories. "Fantasy deliberately challenges our perceptions of reality and forces us to explore new, uncharted realms of thought." (Russell, 2015, pg 216)
1.)Higgins, Ryan T. Wilfred. Dial Books for Young Readers, 2013. -Ages: Early elementary -In this story we meet Wilfred a humongous hairy giant. All he wants is to make some friends. Wilfred comes across a small town, and in this town live people who are all bald, even the ladies. Wilfred then meets a boy at the park who is brave enough to be his friend. Winter is slowly approaching the town so the townspeople decide to shave Wilfred and take his hair and make wigs. Wilfred then gets really cold and cannot come back to play with the little boy. Then the little brave boy finds out what the townspeople did so he makes Wilfred some giant gloves and goes out in search of him. He gets caught in a storm and the townspeople felt sorry for what they did. Then they make Wilfred a jacket by sewing back his hair. -This book is a humorous story that many children will enjoy. It is cute and has a really touching story behind it. It teaches children all about kindness and how it can go a long way. Also how friends are always great to have. The illustrations are very detailed and follow the story very accurately. Wilfred is considered the fantasy object in this story as he is a mage up hairy giant. 2.)Wallace, Adam, and Andy Elkerton. And the monster says Goodnight! -This book is great for halloween time. Children love stories about made up monsters and how friendly they can be. This story is very imaginative and allows children to use their imagination while reading this book. It is clear that the monster is the fantasy element of this story because we all know that monsters are not real. I would definitely recommend reading this story around halloween time as it is a story that children can enjoy. 3.)Ward, Lindsay. Please Bring Balloons. It is a cute story and very enjoyable for children who like to be adventuress. The illustrations in this book are beautiful and colorful. This story has a lot of events and would be a great book to use to help students build on their re telling skills. 4.)Allsburg, Chris Van. Zathura: a Space Adventure. Scholastic Inc., 2005. -Ages: Early elementary -This story is a classic twist of Jumanji. Danny and Walter are two brothers who don't get along very well. Then Danny and Walter quickly realize that this game had sent them into outer space. Then the brothers begin to play the game since it won't take them home unless they finish the game. As these things from the cards begin to happen to Danny and Walter they work together and overcome every obstacle. Until a black hole comes along and sucks Walter up and takes him back to when he was chasing his brother and they find the game, and this time he shoves it into the trash seeing that he has already played it. Then is goes on to Danny and Walter getting along and playing catch together. -This story is very creative and adventurous. The illustrations are all in black and white which gives a little extra uniqueness to the story. The message this story sends is very deep that many children will have trouble understanding so it is important to pick the appropriate audience when reading this story.
